Invar Model for δ-phase Pu: Thermal Expansion, Elastic, and Magnetic properties
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a statistical mechanical model for the anomalous thermodynamic properties of FCC delta phase plutonium and Pu-Ga alloys. The model is based on the addition of a two-level, “invar”-like, electronic energy structure to the ordinary Debye model for the lattice; there is no assumption of magnetic character of these electronic levels. Along with the usual Debye temperature and lattice Grüneisen constant, Θ and γ, the model includes two additional parameters, the energy spacing, ∆E, and an electronic Grüneisen constant, Γ. ∆E is 1400 K, and Γ is negative and depends strongly on Ga content. The model accounts satisfactorily for thermal expansion, and it accounts for the anomalous decrease of the bulk modulus with temperature provided that one assumes zero elastic stiffness for the excited electronic state. This assumption is consistent with the results of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for Pu. We found some evidence for the hypothetical two-level structure using inelastic neutron scattering.

Atomistic Modeling of the Negative Thermal Expansion in δ-Plutonium Based on the Two-State Description
The δ phase of plutonium with the fcc structure exhibits an unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) over its narrow temperature range of stability, 593-736 K. An accurate description of the anomalous high-temperature volume effect of plutonium goes beyond the current capability of electronic-structure calculations. We propose an atomistic scheme to model the thermodynamic properties of δ-Pu ba...
متن کاملInvar effect in Pu-Ga alloys
We show that the anomalous thermal expansion behavior of Pu-Ga alloys can be explained by an invar effect, which is modeled by assuming the thermal transfer of Pu atoms from a lower-energy, higher-volume δ1 state to a higher-energy, lowervolume δ2 state. From a fit to the available neutron diffraction data on the lattice constants of Pu-Ga alloys, the energy separation of these states is found ...

Zinc coating is formed by the heterogeneous assembly of the Γ, Γ1, δ, ζ and η phases whose mechanical properties greatly differ from each other. Thermal strains resulting from large differences between thermal expansion coefficients are partially relaxed by the formation of a crack network. In order to model this phenomenon, initial hardness, thermal expansion coefficient αi and toughness (KIC)...

In this research the magnetoelastic properties of Nd6Fe13-xCoxCu (x = 0 and 1) intermetallic compoundes are investigated. Analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns indicates that a single phase is formed approximately for x = 0 and the x = 1 sample is multi-phase. The lattice parameters were decreased, the Néel temperature of main phase and the Curie temperature of impurity phase was increased...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Simulations of High-moment { Low-moment Transitions in Invar Alloys
We have reproduced magneto-volume eeects typical for Invar alloys by examining a spin-analogous model which describes coupled spatial and magnetic degrees of freedom and, additionally, chemical disorder. Constant pressure Monte Carlo simulations of this model show an almost vanishing thermal expansion over a broad range of temperatures below T C , a softening of the bulk modulus and the absence...
